After the murder of his Master, Splinter was forced to roam the sewers of New York City where he found and later trained the Turtles to be ninja warriors. Despite his soft-spoken manner, Master Splinter still has the power to lay a smack down when necessary.

A Whole New Shell Game .hack//Versus Storyline Mutated by the same Ooze that changed the Turtles, the rat known as Splinter was previously the pet of Hamato Yoshi. Upon Yoshi's death at the hands of The Shredder, Splinter scurried off to the sewer. After his mutation, he began teaching the Turtles the ninjutsu he had picked up from watching Yoshi. In effect, he was the teacher and father figure to the Turtles.
